Belize Zoo
The basics
The self-proclaimed “best little zoo in the world” is fairly small and can be explored in just a few hours. Optional animal encounters led by wildlife experts let you get closer to jaguars, tapirs, boa constrictors, and other animal residents in a safe way. The zoo is a popular stop on combo tours that include other wildlife and outdoor adventures, such as the Baboon Sanctuary, cave tubing tours, and exploration of ancient Maya ruins.
Things to know before you go
- On-site facilities include a café, picnic area, and gift shop.
- The zoo is ideal for families, with stroller-friendly paths and a playground.
- The site is fully accessible for wheelchair users and guests with disabilities.
- Bring bug spray even in the dry season, as the jungle habitat means lots of mosquitos.
How to get there
Belize Zoo is about an hour drive from both the Belize City cruise terminal and airport. Most day tours from Belize City include round-trip transportation, or you can take the regular bus towards Benque from Belize City’s main bus terminal, alighting at Mile 29. There is free parking available at the zoo.

When to get there
Nighttime tours are a great way to see what the zoo’s residents get up to after the sun goes down. The dry season (December to May) brings a little respite from the mosquitos, but be prepared for warm temperatures and heavy rain year round.
Belize Zoo Jungle Lodge
Get even closer to nature with an overnight retreat at the Belize Zoo Jungle Lodge, also known as the Tropical Education Center. Accommodation options range from backpacker-friendly campsites and dorms to private casitas, tucked into a tropical lowland forest. Listen to the sounds of the savannah by night and learn more about Belizean wildlife on guided nature walks or a canoe trip down the Sibun River.
