Richmond Village

21A Bridge Street, Richmond, Tasmania

The Basics

Thanks to its close proximity to the capital, Richmond village makes a popular destination for a morning or afternoon tour from Hobart. Richmond’s principal sights, such as St. John Church, the Richmond Bridge, and the Old Hobart Town Model Village, are the highlights of a walking tour, while most tours also include some free time to explore independently and browse the shops.

Full-day tours often combine a visit to Richmond village with a city sightseeing tour, a view from the top of Mt. Wellington, or nearby attractions such as the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.

I had such a great time at this tour to Wineglass Bay. Alex is very experienced and knowledgeable guide that really carried about everyone in the group. He made sure that each person would have a great experience. We all took home nice memories and awesome local tips. Nice comfy ride in the bus, small group, great walk, beautiful sceneries and tasty food. Full day of fun! Also, Alex did his best of implementing all the safety measures for Covid-19 which made the tour very safe and relaxing.

Day Tour in Mt. Field, Mt. Wellington, Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and Richmond
Got to experience nature, get up close with native Tassie wildlife and visited a historical site - the Richmond bridge - this tour has got it all. It was a small group so it felt very private and I felt very lucky to have spent the day with some very lovely tour mates. Thanks Jarrod for being an awesome guide.

Wineglass Bay & Freycinet NP Full Day Tour from Hobart via Richmond Village
The day is long but worth it! Alex was knowledgeable with a sense of humour which made for an enjoyable day. Been to Wineglass Bay before but on a tour the experience is still worthwhile; guides know exactly where to take you. Honeymoon Bay is picturesque! Freycinet is a must when visiting Tassie. The walk is a little steep on the way up but not too long or difficult. A must see!

The tour was a great way to experience a variety of what Tassie has to offer. Great day out from Hobart, driving through the countryside, Russell Falls was breathtaking, Bonorong was educational, wonderful food at historic Richmond and the views from Mt Wellington competed the day. Jarrod was a friendly and informative driver who made the day more special. He couldn’t do enough for us.

Mark the guide/driver was fantastic, Richmond was very pretty and interesting. I loved Bonorong, hearing about the animals and what the sanctuary does was so interesting. Really enjoyed feeding the kangaroos.

Thanks Tim,for a very special afternoon.Your knowledge on the local histoty was amazing,i was hanging on every word. What a lovely little township Richmond turned out to be.Lots of convict stories and buildings that were built by their own hands still remain there. From the local gaol to the haunted bridge. We didnt escape without an encounter from one of the local gaol spirit s either, which i found to be very intreguing. Many thanks for some great memories.

Richmond’s Convict History

Richmond village was founded in the 1820s as an important military staging post and convict station that linked Hobart with Port Arthur, and the remains of its convict heritage can still be spotted around town. The landmark Richmond Bridge is the oldest stone bridge in Australia, built by Tasmania’s convict workers in 1825. The town is also home to Richmond Gaol (now a museum), Australia’s oldest jail, where convicts were held en route to Port Arthur. The Old Hobart Town Model Village offers a miniature re-creation of the early 19th-century town, which affords a fascinating glimpse into everyday life during the convict era.
