Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square, London, England, SW1

The Basics

Trafalgar Square is one of the best places to take the pulse of life in England’s capital city. While many tourists come here independently, a guide can help enlighten visitors as to the significance of the square’s many monuments and sights as well as draw attention to the splendid surrounding architecture. Trafalgar Square is commonly included on sightseeing tours of the West End and Central London, along with nearby Westminster, where you’ll find Big Ben and the United Kingdom’s Houses of Parliament. You may also encounter Trafalgar Square during guided walking tours, bus tours, and bike tours.

This beer tour is highly recommended!!
Dan was a great guide. He not only knows the history of the city but also of the establishment that we went to. All the beers that he picked were fantastic. Really fun tour!!

Pub Tour of London's West End: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Soho
We visit London regularly and fancied doing something a little different. Dan was waiting for us at the meeting point early and he was relaxed, fun and informative. The tour was very pleasant and not heavy on walking. The drinks and snacks were very nice, the last drink was a particularly delicious! I would definitely do another tour with this firm.

Nick, our tour guide was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about beer and pub culture. He took us to four different pubs where we were able to sample local beer. We explored the Covent Garden which was a unique experience. This was a really fun tour and I would highly recommend it.

Best of London in half a Day - Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square
Excellent tour by Lucia. This was my first trip to London and she showed me the major sites in Westminster, Mayfair, and Soho. We ended the tour at O’Neill’s Pub on Carnaby Street where I enjoyed some fish and chips and a beer. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring an umbrella.

Fantastic experience doing the pub tour in the West End! Our tour guide was a lot of fun and very informative. He had so many great stories to tell and we visited some very interesting old pubs in London! Definitely would do it again. We also tasted beer that we may not have chosen if we were travelling on our own!

Pub Tour of London's West End: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Soho
Our guide was attentive, friendly and full of lots of historical knowledge about the pubs in London, as well as the process of beer making. The only downside is that one of the pubs required that a person be age 21 to enter despite the drinking age being 18. The pub did finally allow my son to enter with the group but it was a bit embarrassing.

Pub Tour of London's West End: Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Soho
We enjoyed this historical tour of London's West End pubs! It was nice to be able to have a glass of wine instead of beer nice I'm not a beer drinker. Everyone else in our group were beer drinkers and they said they enjoyed the experience of the different brews and the history of the making of beer! Loved all the historical pubs and the tidbits of info that we would not have otherwise learned without our amazing tour guide! Thanks for a fun experience!

When to Get There

Trafalgar Square is at its liveliest in summer. Lunchtime is particularly good for people-watching as office workers decamp from their desks to eat on the steps in front of the National Gallery. In the run-up to the festive period, a giant Christmas tree—a gift from Norway to the people of Britain—is erected in the center of the square, and carolers belt out festive songs to raise money for charity.

The Fourth Plinth

Built in 1841, Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth was originally meant to host a statue of King William IV, but because of a lack of funds, it stood empty for more than a century. Until recently, that is, when the mayor of London decided to put the plinth to good use: as a showcase for contemporary artwork. In 2017 the plinth held David Shrigley’sReally Good, a 22-foot (7-meter) bronze thumbs-up.
