New York City Fifth Avenue

5th Ave, New York

The Basics

Shoppers will fall in love with the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 49th and 60th streets, with stores like Armani, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Beyond shopping, the street is the site of numerous museums and iconic buildings such as the Empire State Building and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Television fans may want to visit NBC Studios, and nature enthusiasts can wander through Central Park.

Your best bet to cover the miles and miles of sites along Fifth is booking a tour. Hop-on hop-off bus tours travel along the street and offer flexibility, and thematic tours cater to foodies, film aficionados, and architecture enthusiasts. Small-group and private tours are also available.

New York City Luxury Bus Tour with Harbor Cruise and One World Observatory Admission
Tour guide J was awesome, had a great time. He had built in bathroom breaks, if you were falling behind he would wait for you to catch up. Had plenty of ice cold water to drink. Had lots of information about the city. Would definitely recommend.

This tour was the absolute highlight of our trip. It ended up just being the two of us but Sergio made us feel like the two most important people he’s ever given a tour to. Ask for Sergio! He’s amazing and knows an insane amount of history about NYC and more it’s incredible! He knows all the best spots too for seeing things and pictures! I was so thrilled with the tour I cannot wait to go back and do another one with him!

New York City Tour with Driver-Guide and Separate Guide Option
This was our first trip to the Big Apple and we wanted to get the skinny from a local guide. Our guide's name was Mr. Piedmonte and he was punctual, courteous, accommodating, and very informative. He actually extended our tour by 90 minutes without our asking because he wanted us to see more of his city. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting NYC.

This was a fab tour, Stefan our guide was very knowledgeable and pointed out sites and facts we would not have known about if we had not been on this tour. We stopped many times for photos etc and even popped inside one of the Trump towers ! It was a fun and informative few hours and I would highly recommend this to anyone

New York City Sightseeing Tour by Coach
Our tour guide (John) was a walking historian... very knowledgeable. Our tour ended up being just my friend and I, which was fun. Starting out at a frosty 22 degrees, he made some quick adjustments to his schedule when a 15 minute walk in the wind didn’t really sound like much fun to us. He took us to some “off the beaten paths” for great photos, and when we showed interest in real estate, he incorporated as much info on that as he could. (Which was a lot!) It was a great experience, highly recommend it, especially if you don’t have much time in the City. You couldn’t ever see that much on your own. From Harlem to The Battery, Chinatown, TriBeCa, Times Square to the Upper East Side, Central Park and Lincoln Square and spring much more, we covered a LOT of ground!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Purchase skip-the-line passes in advance to gain entry to the most popular spots.

  • Guided bike tours are great for exercising while seeing the sites.

  • Most citywide tours—and many neighborhood tours—will hit a stretch of Fifth Avenue.

How to Get There

The bus is a great way to get around Fifth Avenue; the M1, M2, and M3 all run on Fifth, so you can tour the avenue for the price of a Metrocard swipe. By subway, take the 4 or 5 train on Lexington Avenue and get off at your preferred cross street—86th Street is ideal for seeing museums, while 59th is best for shopping.

When to Get There

Fifth Avenue is great all year. In spring, summer, and fall, the weather is most inviting. Winter is cold, but window displays are festive and the Rockefeller Center tree is sparkling. On weekends, Fifth Avenue is busiest, particularly along shopping and museum corridors. Consider visiting during the day, midweek, to avoid crowds.
