Meatpacking District

West of Eighth Avenue, New York City, New York, 10014

The Basics

This former industrial center used to be made up largely of slaughterhouses, meatpacking plants, and scores of open-air meat markets. Today, the neighborhood is better known for its high-end boutiques and restaurants. Although the Meatpacking District has changed significantly over time, its past remains evident. As you wander the cobblestone streets, you’ll find facades from former meat lockers, and even a few meat packers still operating in the area.

The best way to learn about the neighborhood’s transformation is to explore with a guide. Walking tours of the Meatpacking District often include visits to the High Line elevated park and nearby Chelsea Market. Sex and the City–themed tours also usually stop by the district, the setting for several memorable scenes from the TV show.

Christine was very pleasant and personable. We had a small group so it was easy to hear and questions could be addressed. It was our first introduction to the Highline which we had heard of and the Chelsea Market was an interesting experience to visit. We also walked to see where and what the "Little Island" (park)was.

We really enjoyed our tour with Alyssa. She was very knowledgeable, and made the tour a lot of fun. It was windy and cold on the day of our tour, and it was mostly outside, so we were a bit frozen when we finished. But, Alyssa managed to get us inside and let us warm up when she could. This is an area of the city that we had not previously been to, and we were really glad that we made time for it.

We spent a lovely morning walking thru Chelsea seeing the exciting Market and the High Line and Meatpacking District. Rory was knowledgeable and brought the area back to its beginnings which was a treat for a couple of history buffs. Learned a lot, visited a new part of the city for us and the pace was just right. Two hours flew by.

This tour was very informative. Amelia did a great job with her knowledge and insight of the area ...specifically the Chelsea Market and the Highline itself. She was very congenial and integrated everyone on the tour resulting in a great experience. It is a really good activity for anyone with zero knowledge of this part of NYC.

This tour was a great way to explore Chelsea Market and the highline for the first time. The tour was fun, informative and introduced us to lots of things to see and do in the area. Our guide Amelia was friendly and well prepared. She knew exactly where to go and the interesting landmarks to point out. At the end of the tour we had time to return to a few places on our own and enjoy a great lunch. We loved it!

We only have 4 of us in the group which made it a nice intimate tour. Not a struggle to hear for sure! Fun area. I'd have liked to have walked a lot further on the Highline itself and heard a bit more about specific buildings.

The High Line

The opening of the 1.45-mile-long (2.33-kilometer-long) High Line heralded the completion of the Meatpacking District’s makeover. Once a freight line running along the edge of the district, the High Line is now one of New York’s beloved green spaces. Stroll through the elevated park while enjoying views of Manhattan and the Hudson River—you’ll even spot the Statue of Liberty. To learn about the project, take a High Line walking tour.
