The Basics

Rather than navigate George Town’s maze-like streets alone, get your bearings by joining an introductory walking or bike tour. Guided tours usually cover Fort Cornwallis, Little India, and the Clan Jetties. Food-focused tours are also popular with first-time visitors who enjoy sampling Penang’s renowned street food representing a variety of Asian and European cultures. An evening food tour offers the chance to try the widest variety of food stalls.

Guided Tour of Cheong Fatt Tze's Blue Mansion in George Town
This is the second time that I have taken this tour. More of the mansion was open to the public the last time I was here and the tour was longer. The current tour is still interesting and informative even if there is less to see.

3-Hour Heritage on a Plate Dinner Hop in George Town Penang
We absolutely loved the tour. Our guide Danny was great and tailored the tour to suit our needs perfectly. All the food was wonderful and the historical information was a brilliant addition. I would recommend this activity as a good start to a George Town visit. It really helped us to get our bearings and discover some excellent food.

Private Half-Day Hawker Trails Food Tour in George Town
Our tour guide Lam was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Took us to where the locals would eat for the famous dishes and indeed the food we sampled were delicious and we wouldn’t have found these places if we searched on our own. He was also telling us stories of local areas and sights while he drove us. Highly recommended!

Half-Day George Town History Private Tour
Good tour with very interesting historic sites. Guide had excellent English skills. Only odd part was that he said he had to take a picture of me at each site to prove to his company that he had done the tour.

3-Hour Heritage on a Plate Lunch Hop in George Town Penang
My husband and I did this tour with our 4 year old son and were the only people on the tour. Our guide Jeremy was flexible with catering to our needs and was happy to answer all our questions including questions not really related to food. We enjoyed going to places we wouldn't find on our own and trying the different local dishes, and hearing about the background to the dishes. Another highlight was the summary email Jeremy sent - outlining the places we went and the food we had, as well as recommendations of other places to go and what to have there and even how to order particular things. I'd highly recommend doing one of the Heritage on a Plate tours - particularly early on in your stay at Penang - however I would recommend trying for the dinner hop if possible because it is really hot in the middle of the day!

When to Get There

In northern Malaysia, the dry season runs between August and November. During this time, rainfall decreases and temperatures are cooler, making it the best time to explore on foot. George Town provides a plethora of activities during both day and night, but Love Lane area is especially lively with music and street stalls after dusk.

The Best Museums in Penang

In stark contrast to its austere colonial heritage, Penang boasts several novelty museums that promise hilarious photos and provide a great way to escape a sudden downpour. Favorites include the Upside Down Museums, where you can take mind-bending photographs that make you appear to be standing upside down, and the Ghost Museum, which comes with family-friendly scares.
