Te Puia, Rotorua, New Zealand

The Basics

Admission tickets and guided tours through Te Puia usually include a visit to the Kiwi House for a look at this nocturnal national bird housed in a dark enclosure. In the national weaving and carving schools, you can watch Maori students re-create the traditional arts of their ancestors.

For what is arguably the best evening in Rotorua, come in the evening to experience Te Po—a traditional ceremony andhangi feast (food cooked in a traditional in-ground oven), along with a music and dance performance. Travelers can also visit Te Puia as part of a Rotorua sightseeing tour, an eco tour, or an excursion focused on arts and crafts.

The best day of our cruise
It was the best day. The Te Puia Maori Cultural Centre - the Maori welcome, the show - absolutely wonderful. Walking around the hot springs, visiting the work studios, wood carving etc. excellent. Our tour guide made the experience even better. Rotorua is such a lovely place. Tauranga is beautiful. Thoroughly recommend doing this tour.

Te Puia - Geothermal 6 Hour Guided Tour with Highlights: Shore ExcursionTauranga
Loved this tour, it was perfect for my mom that has a hard time walking with her knees. They picked us up right at the port and dropped us off with still plenty of time to wonder the town

Fantastic tour albeit a long day. Our driver Michael was a fountain of knowledge and drove very safely. The Waitomo caves were amazing and the commentary by very enthusiastic guides made it fascinating. A great day out.

Waitomo Caves & Rotorua Small Group Tour including Te Puia from Auckland
This was a very memorable and AMAZING excursion! All the way from the scenic drive to admiring nature in its purist, most natural form was so incredible. Being able to see glowworms in a cave, learning about the Maori, and seeing active geysers and mud pools, made for such an unforgettable experience!

Te Puia - Geothermal 6 Hour Guided Tour with Highlights: Shore ExcursionTauranga
Andrew was a fabulous guide! He took us to the kiwi orchard where we learned how they are grown and had samples to taste. The tour of Rotarua was led by a Maori guide who showed us around the living village and then we were able to watch the cultural show of Maori songs and dances. Wonderful! Lastly we stopped and took a walk along the Redwood forest trail. Andrew shared so much information about the region and took little side stops to point out interesting things. We enjoyed the tour very much!

Tour pick up was on time. The minibus was not branded Cheeky Kiwi, it was operated by a contractor so I did not recognise it at first. It was great there were only 2 destinations as it would have been too rushed otherwise.

Pohutu the Showstopper

When visitors first catch a glimpse of Pohutu Geyser—which thunders up from the earth and shoots skyward with a column of water that’s nearly 100 feet (30 meters) high—they begin to understand why this geothermal attraction has drawn people for centuries. You can witness the eruption of the Southern Hemisphere's largest active geyser day or night.
