The Basics

Sitting between the Richmond and Sunset districts, Golden Gate Park stretches about 50 blocks across San Francisco from Ocean Beach on the western edge to the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. The de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences are the two main cultural institutions (with entrance fees) and sit conveniently near each other at the Music Concourse. The Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco Botanical Garden, Shakespeare Garden, National AIDS Memorial Grove, and Stow Lake are other popular attractions in this tourist-heavy section of the park. Moving west toward the Pacific Ocean, the park spreads out with more trails (both paved and dirt), a 9-hole golf course, disc golf, meadows that host annual music festivals, windmills, and even a bison paddock. Park Segway tours and bike rentals are the top ways to explore.

Golden Gate Park Segway Tour - Easy to learn then 2.5 hours of gliding fun
Love taking a tour on a Segway. Very good and organized instruction to get acclimated. The park itself, although massive, was not as well maintained or as beautiful as I was expecting. Dress in more layers than you expect.

Golden Gate Park Segway Tour - Easy to learn then 2.5 hours of gliding fun
Johannes was an awesome guide! Very knowledgeable about Golden Gate Park and Segways. I've been to the park many times but learned tons of things I didn't know before. We'd never ridden a Segway before and Johannes made it easy to learn. We were riding like pros by the end. Tons of fun!! We'll definitely be coming back to ride on the Fisherman's wharf tour!

3HR Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park GoCar Tour
My recommendation is to get this in EARLY in your trip to SF. There is prob no better way to see more, faster and to get a great overview of the area for things to might way to spend more time on. With just a few short stops, we were a little hard pressed on the 3-hour tour but, I am not sure I want to spend too much more time sitting in them. From the inside, the GoCar is a little noisier than I would like but, that is more of a sitting-inside-it perspective as they aren't really that loud. It would be nice to have a 30sec rewind or a say-that-again button on the digital tour guide... so, play attention when she is talking. You can really cover a lot of ground in these things and the overview of the area is fantastic. I recommend the 3 or 4 hour tour to allow for more flexibility and seeing everything.

Their crew is friendly and make sure you are trained properly before they take you on excursion. Also, they take you off roads and on trails. Our tour guide Johannas gave his 100% to make this memorable experience for us.

Segway through Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park Segway Tour - Easy to learn then 2.5 hours of gliding fun
What a completely enjoyable afternoon. Our guide, Johannes, was full of interesting information on the history, flora and fauna of Golden Gate Park, mixed with humor. We were supplied with gear including a radio, which allowed us to hear the information while riding. We also stopped at interesting locations for longer descriptions and an occasional historical picture. The tour covered the eastern portion of GGP and went though paths that were both paved an in paved. Safe and fun. A good family event

Golden Gate Park Segway Tour - Easy to learn then 2.5 hours of gliding fun
A brilliant experience that I would highly recommend. Kelly our instructor took us through all the safety training with great care to ensure that everyone was completely at ease on the Segway. We then went on the tour riding on all surfaces finishing off with some off road trail routes. Well done Kelly - great job from start to finish 😀

When to Get There

San Francisco offers mild weather most of the year, so the park is enjoyable nearly every day (just be sure to wear layers). Music lovers may want to visit for the annual Outside Lands Music Festival in August or the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in October. Beware the city’s famous fog, affectionately known as Karl, which rolls in from the ocean in July and August, giving San Francisco its chilly summers.

The Golden Gate Park Bison Paddock

The most unusual thing about this city park is its bison paddock, home to a herd of American bison since the 1890s. Stumbling upon the animals is a delightful surprise for many visitors who make it to the western section of the park. To find the meadow, head along John F. Kennedy Drive just west of Spreckels Lake. Hopefully you’ll catch them near the fence, but know that they’re not always in view.
