The Basics

Nearly all city tours include a stop or drive through Chinatown. For history, check out the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum and Portsmouth Square. Or book a Chinatown walking or Segway tour for insight into the neighborhood’s food and culture. A stop in the area is often combined with a visit to nearby North Beach or a tasty, traditional lunch. Chinatown food tours are especially popular.

The One Day in San Francisco Tour with Alcatraz
Patrick was our tour guide, he was friendly and very knowledgable as he took us around San Fran and the surrounding areas. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to explore the city, especially if its a short trip, this tour packed a lot in, but didn't feel rushed. Felt safe and covid guidelines were followed.

Our driver was amazing. He was knowledgeable of the area and friend to the guest. Transportation was clean and water provided. Took us to a couple hidden gems of the city. Great tour guide.

Big Bus San Francisco Hop-on Hop-off Open Top Tour
The tour is comprehensive, the bus is clean, but the sound system is awful - so much feedback on the headphones, we only heard about 10% of the narration- same for the people around us. The employees told us there was literally nothing they could do.

Small Group San Francisco Half-Day City Tour
We had an amazing time on our trip! Everything was perfectly timed and we had more than enough time to spend at all the destinations. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and experienced. We would definitely recommend this trip to our friends and family! We did this tour during Covid times and the vehicle was completely sanitized and everybody wore a mask the entire time. You won’t regret booking these guys for any tours! Matt B

Classic Sidecar Tour of San Francisco
Really enjoy this trip that give a great overview of SF city. The side-car tour has several advantages compared to "classical" tours : - easy to look in all directions - easy to get around (even in small alleys) - Enjoy the Californian weather (even in december) - Covid free I highly recommend this experience to discover san francisco

Skip The Bus: San Francisco By Luxury Van Tour
Brian was a fantastic tour guide. He was friendly, polite and very knowledgeable. The tour took us to all the city landmarks, plus many other places only locals know about. Being in the van gave us access to areas that buses cannot. It was only our family of four in the van, so we were very comfortable and had Brian’s attention all the time.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • This is a neighborhood to explore on foot, so wear comfortable shoes.

  • Chinatown bumps right into North Beach, another favorite San Francisco neighborhood, so it’s easy to visit both.

  • Grab cash before you go, as many of the small shops and food venues only accept cash or have credit card minimums.

How to Get There

Chinatown covers about 24 city blocks in northeast San Francisco between Powell, Kearny, Bush, and Broadway streets. Enter properly through the Dragon Gate at Bush and Grant, walking north into the crowd to find souvenir shops and eateries. Located in the densest area of the city between Nob Hill, Union Square, and the Financial District, Chinatown is easy to reach by walking, city bus, and the Powell Street Cable Car. Driving is not recommended on the traffic- and pedestrian-heavy streets.

When to Get There

For shopping, go in the late morning when the shops are open but many visitors haven’t yet arrived. Otherwise, the evening hours offer a lively atmosphere, when locals head to Chinatown for drinks and dinner. To see the neighborhood at its best, visit during Chinese New Year, which falls in January or February.
