The Basics

Butchart Gardens are a popular spot to visit from Victoria, Vancouver, and even Seattle, either on a gardens tour or combined with a whale-watching cruise, sightseeing tour, or seaplane flight and three-course dinner in the park. As you make your way through the different garden areas—from rose-covered paths to the dramatic Sunken Garden—you can admire blooming bulbs in springtime, head out on the dahlia walk during summer, admire floral displays in gorgeous fall colors, or take in the Japanese-inspired garden in the winter months.

Beautiful weather added to the experience with an excellent driver and guide. Enjoyed the village atmosphere of Victoria before heading to the Butchart Gardens, which can only be described as spectacular.

Victoria and Butchart Gardens Tour from Vancouver
Dan was a terrific driver and tour guide. The bus was clean and comfortable. Butchart Gardens and Victoria were fabulous. Loved the ferry. Long but worthwhile day We got our money's worth. Would suggest the driver ask noisy, chatty people to whisper. It was sometimes hard to hear Dan, and he gave an excellent commentary along the way.

Private Butchart Gardens Tour
Butchart Gardens is absolutely gorgeous! Our trip was made even better by our tour guide, Marianne, who is very knowledgeable about the history of the gardens and the different flowers and trees in the garden. She was not only kind and helpful but she communicated with us very well before the trip so we knew what to expect. I would definitely recommend this experience.

Private Small Group Deluxe Tour of Victoria & to Butchart Gardens
Linda picked us up promptly at cruise ship even though we were delayed getting off Vsl. Took scenic route to Butchart Gardens, always conversing with us with questions answered, so personably. Drove through Victoria, stopped at Craiggarroch Castle, to scenic overlook, along water front and downtown. I would highly recommend this tour. Comfortable vehicle, just a great experience

Seaplane Flight to Victoria with Ground Transport and Butchart Gardens Admission
Very well organized and flexible. You can spend as much or as little time in Butchart Gardens as you want as the bus back to Victoria runs every hour on the hour. The flights were wonderful and the scenery from the air was breathtaking. Everything was top notch.

Victoria and Butchart Gardens Day Trip from Vancouver
We enjoyed every part of our day - Victoria was beautiful and the Dim Sum in Chinatown was delicious. Butchart Gardens was amazingly gorgeous and very little in way of crowds. The timing of when we arrived (3:45 pm) was perfect and we had 2 hours to explore. We felt like it was plenty of time and didn’t feel rushed. Our guide was humorous, knowledgeable and easygoing. Kept us on time all day with a very helpful manner.

4-Hour Grand City and Butchart Gardens Tour
Butchart Gardens was the highlight of the day. Too beautiful to describe. It was our first and probably only time to ride in a Bentley/Rolls Royce. Enjoyed getting to see the sights of Victoria. We did not make the brief stops that the tour description indicated would be made. Richard was prompt, personable and is a very knowledgeable historian.

When to Get There

Butchart Gardens are open year-round, and during peak season (July through August) they get quite crowded between 11am and 3pm. Arrive at opening and you’ll be rewarded with few crowds and beautiful lighting for your photographs. On summer evenings, the gardens host fireworks displays every Saturday night in July and August. In December, the garden’s Waterwheel Square is converted into an outdoor ice-skating rink, complete with Christmas decorations and lights.

Butchart’s Themed Gardens

There are six themed gardens here: the Sunken Garden, the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden, the Concert Lawn Walk, and the Mediterranean Garden. The original Sunken Garden is a must-see, home to annuals, flowering trees, and unique shrubs, although kids will love the hand-carved wooden carousel along the Concert Lawn Walk. Meanwhile, the serene Japanese Garden invites contemplation and the small Mediterranean Garden has drought-tolerant plants from areas of the world with climates similar to Victoria’s.
