The Basics

The market is now comprised of just one area—the public Outer Market, which features shops, sushi, and various market stalls. The Inner Market, where the famous fresh tuna fish auctions were held, relocated to Toyosu Fish Market in 2020.

The Tsukiji Market is often visited with a tour guide on city walking and biking tours. Fish market tours can also be combined with other Japanese cuisine experiences, such as sushi making classes, cooking classes, and tastings. Nearby attractions seen on sightseeing tours include the Hamarikyu Gardens, the Asakusa district, and the upscale Ginza neighborhood.

Fabulous
Sanae was informative and personable on our tour through the outer market. We ate, drank, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves under her guidance. It was the perfect intro to our stay in Japan. Highly recommend this tour to immerse yourself in the culture and tastes of Japan.

Investigating Tsukiji Fish Market and Enjoy amazing seafood
A very enjoyable and satiating tour. As you may know, the fish market at Tsukiji has recently moved, but no matter, this tour was very enjoyable and eye opening nonetheless. The guide was very generous and immediately friendly. A wide variety of culinary delights were enjoyed during the tour. If you would like a friendly introduction to some of Japan's culinary delights, this would be a good tour for you!

Tsukiji Fish Market Visit with Sushi Making Experience
Our guide Yoshino is very good. Knowledgeable, thoughtful and gave us a lot of information about the different local food. She was very patient with all our questions. We highly recommend her as a guide for the Tsukiji market tour. The sushi making class was also very good. The chef was a good teacher and the food was good.

Tsukiji Fish Market Food and Culture Walking Tour
We went on a food tour with Kyoko at the Tsukiji Fish Market on Friday September 27. She was great tour guide and very knowledgeable. We tasted a variety of food, including fresh tuna, dashi, Japanese snacks etc and the tour ended in a standing sushi bar with sake. We had a wonderful time.

Tsukiji Fish Market Food and Culture Walking Tour
Our Tsukiji tour was fantastic! The market itself is super interesting. Our guide, Chi, was very friendly and knowledgeable and able to answer our many questions. The food was delicious, too! We would highly recommend this tour—we learned so much more than we would have on our own.

Tokyo Tsukiji Outer Market Walking Tour and Rolled Sushi Class
First part was a tour over the outer fishmarket with our awesome guide yoko who showed and explained us everything. We got a lot of information about traditional japanese food and could try everything (e.g. little dried crabs tasting like spicy crackers). After the tour we visited a modern equipped cooking school to learn to prepare a typical japanese meal. We had great fun and learned a lot with our enchanting chef Hiromi. Our conclusion: all thumbs up!!

Both the guide and our teacher were so good and informative. They took their time to explain all things and answered all our questions. If there's only one guided tour you do, do this one!

Tsukiji Fish Market Food and Culture Walking Tour
My guide Lily was awesome!! I did this experience on my first day in Tokyo and it was a wonderful experience. The food choices where great and so fresh! Lily was kind and so patient with the group. Her English was great and she told us so much about the fish market including a little of the history of the market. Lily also gave us wonderful ideas and places to go in Tokyo. She went to above and beyond and even helped me get back to the train station. I will be forever grateful to her!!!

Tsukiji Fish Market Food and Culture Walking Tour
The Tsukiji Fish Market tour was the highlight of my visit to Japan. Our guide Kiyoka got us in to see how Japanese omelets are made and how tuna is trimmed for market, among other insider privileges. She was personable, and answered our many questions with diplomacy and grace.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Inner Market at Tsujiki Fish Market relocated to Toyosu in 2020, roughly 1.5 miles (2 kilometers) away from Tsujiki—head there to see the famed tuna auction.

  • The Outer Market, home to vendors and restaurants, still calls the original Tsujiki Fish Market home.

  • Take advantage of the many vendors in the Outer Market who sell some of the best sushi and freshest seafood you’ll ever taste.

  • The Outer Market of the Tsujiki Fish Market is technically wheelchair accessible but not that easy to navigate due to the large crowds.

Note that trains and buses do not run 24 hours in Tokyo; you can take a taxi to the market or plan on finding lodgings nearby.

Toyosu Fish Market

Opened in 2020, Toyosu Fish Market is the home of Tsujiki's famed early-morning tuna auction and is almost twice the size of its predecesor. Arrive early for the tuna auction and watch from dedicated viewing platforms before exploring the seafood and fresh produce stalls. Many of the same eateries that were once available in Tsujiki can be found here. The market's closed on Sundays.
