Poor experience

Tour guides were a little pushy when it came to buying souvenirs and wanting tips at the end of the tour. Arrived 2.5 hours late at resort than scheduled at end of trip. Tour of Mayan temple was rushed. Made unexpected food stops.

Dear Travelers, First of all, thank you for taking your time and to tell us about your experience on our shared tour to Chichen-Itza. We are sorry to hear, that the experience was not pleasant for you. We would like you to ask you some questions regarding the experience, you answers may help us to improve our products quality overall. You are saying, that the "Tour of Mayan temple was rushed". We usually give our travelers 2,5-3 hours in Chichen-Itza. You can explore the ruins with the assigned guide or on your own path. Usually this time is more, than enough. Have you been given less time on the tour? "Arrived 2.5 hours". Usually our clients are back to their hotels at around 8-9 p.m. depending on the traffic. It is 12 hours tour and the distance to Chichen-Itza is large. Can you please specify what time you came back to the hotel on the day of the tour? Whats do you mean by "unexpected food stops"? Waiting for your comments. Thank you in advance. Best regards, OlMar Travel Mexico Team

Just an "ok" tour
Erika_G
, Jul 2021
This tour was average. It was crowded with a lot of people so keep that in mind. We stopped in a Mayan town where we could purchase souvenirs. A buffet lunch was also provided there. Drinks (inluding water) was not provided but could be purchased. They charged about $3 (usd) for water, so bring cash. Visiting the Chichen Itza was great but very hot. I recommend taking lots of water, sunscreen, and an umbrella. This tour company doesn't provide guides on site but you can be assigned a guide when you get there or elect to roam the ruins on your own. We visited Cenote Samal which was not in a cave and open. It was super crowded, so it was not as enjoyable as our visits to other cenotes from different tours. Out of all the tours I took on my trip, this was our least favorite.

Dear Erika, Thank you for taking your time and tell us about your experience on our shared tour to Chichen-Itza. First off all, I would like to highlight, that we do provide professional guide in Chichen-Itza. Those guide you are saying that the travelers can be assigned to are paid by a tour providers. Once you get to Chichen-Itza with our tour you can explore the ruins with the guide we provide o choose to explore on your own. In the tour description you can find a detailed information on what is included and what is not. We do provide lunch, but beverages are not included. The description of the experience on Trip Advisor is very clear about this. When sending a confirmation email to our clients we usually recommend bring water and cash for personal expenses. As for the weather and crowds, we wish we can control this factors, but we can´t. Especially in a high tourist season in the middle of the summer, when it is particularly hot. Thank you for all your comments and observations. We are always working on improving our products quality and these will definitely help us. In conclusion, we would like to add, that those travelers seeking more personalized experience, which suits their specific need (taking a very precise type of the photos, getting to the cenote early in the morning, spend more time in any given spot, etc) we encourage them to book a private experience. On a private tour you will be picked up by private transport, you will have your own personal certificated guide and you will enjoy your own private experience having the opportunity to customize the tour. Please don´t hesitate to contact us, if there is anything else we can help you with. Best regards, OlMar Travel Team

The site is amazing. The heat was insane. The cenote had potential but with such a short time available we didn’t get in. All in all, you go yo see the temple and the ruins but the tour was underwhelming.

Dear Travelers, First of all, thank you for taking your time and tell us about your experience on our shared tour to Chichen-Itza. As for the cenote part, we usually give our travelers 1 hour to swim in the cenote. We have not received any complains before from the travelers about not being able to swim in the cenote at all. Can you please give us more details how this happened, so we can investigate the case? Unfortunately, we have no control over the weather and in Chichen-Itza being an open area it usually gets pretty hot especially in the summer months. When confirming the pick up time, we usually recommend our travelers to bring sunscreen and hats for the sun protection. History and it's archeological structures
JVW
, Jul 2021
The tour is advertised as 12 hours, they picked us up on time, but it was 13 hours, the archeological sites were interesting, however, we had two tour guides and their history information was contradicting, and to certain extend some information did not make any sense, so you wonder who is giving the most accurate information, if any. The tour is too expensive for what it actually offers, they don't even give you water in such a hot day. They took us first to a store where if you buy something you get to have the Shaman perform some kind of brief ritual, (the ritual is advertised as part of the tour, but it does not say that one has to buy something) then we had lunch, which was not very good either, (in fact I did not appreciate one of the servers, touching the food with her bare hands). Then we went to the Chichen Itza where we had another version of what possibly happened in that area, for about 40 minutes, the rest of two hours was walking around vendors and structures, then we went to the Cenote which was crowded and in a fast speed for those who wanted to swim. Then they took us to Valladolid, which was nothing special to us, just more vendors. One thing I would like to mention is that I think that the tour guide should not be promoting his favorite vendors for the tourists to buy from, he claimed he wasn't pushing it but he was, by repeating himself over and over about how much these specific communities depend on us and then kind of discouraging us to buy from other vendors which for us had the same right. We see the need of these people, but we should not be directed to certain groups more than others. I would keep the visit to Chichen Itsa, the Cenote, a better place for lunch. but skip Valladolid, keep the stories straight among tour guides and make it shorter trip, specially if you are not giving water to the travelers and it is too hot.

Dear Travelers,

Thank you for taking your time and tell us about your experience on our shared tour to Chichen-Itza.
We are sorry to hear, that you was not able to fully enjoy the tour because of the things you mention in your review. We would like to comment on some points you mention.

First of all, you are saying, that “The tour is too expensive for what it actually offers”. The tour you booked only costs 84USD/per person and includes pick up & drop off directly from your hotel, air-conditioned vehicle, life guide services, all the entrance fees to Chichen-Itza and cenote and even lunch. If you are able to find the same offer for a less money, please send us the information. “They took us first to a store where if you buy something you get to have the Shaman perform some kind of brief ritual, (the ritual is advertised as part of the tour, but it does not say that one has to buy something)” . We were offering a Temazcal ritual as part of the experience before pandemic, but we no longer offer this part because of the COVID protocols. The ritual you are describing is the one you are offered in the store when buying stones. This has nothing to do with the tour and the vendors offer it as a bono for a purchase. This ritual has never been a part of the tour and was never included in it. “Then we went to the Chichen Itza where we had another version of what possibly happened in that area”. We are sorry to hear you got confused by all the information provided. I must say, that all our guide are licensed guides with years of experience and really deep knowledge of the history. The same is true for the guides working in Chichen-Itza. If you are able to remember the inconsistencies you heard, please send us more details, so can clarify your doubts.

As for promoting vendors. We consider ourself a responsible company and always try to help local communities to grow and prosper. The majority of these local communities are living thanks to sale of crafts they make. These purchases are not obligatory for those participating in the tour.

As for the water, everything not mentioned in the Included part of the tour description is not included in the tour. Water is not mentioned in the list of the Included things. When sending a confirmation email we usually recommend our clients to bring some extra water with you. As for the tour actually lasting 13 hours on the day you took it instead of 12 hours , I must say that the tour duration may vary a little because of the traffic and group itself.

Best regards, Mariia OlMar Travel Team

Good but not Great
Michael_Y
, Jul 2021
The experience was good. We wanted to go see Chichen Itza and the tour delivered. Cenote was wonderful to swim in. Three issues made it 4 star for us instead of 5 star. The day was longer than expected. Took almost 16 hours end to end. We still would have done it, but would have been nice to know we were getting back at 11 instead of 8. Additionally, two of the tour guides strongly suggested not buying with the vendors at chichen itza. They said same items would be cheaper and better at Vallidod. We wanted some hand carved suvineers. We got to Vallidad and they gave us only 30 minutes. Everything was spread out providing little time to shop. There was also much less selection than at chichen itza. I understand Chichen Itza is more expensive but I would have looked more if I had not been told not to. I would do the tour again but would buy the suvineers in the morning and not waited until the last stop where we had little time and selection. Lastly, the tour guide spent at least five minutes asking for tips and telling us they got 0 compensation except tips. We were already planning to tip but the request was over the top. All in all, a good but not great experience. Definitely would do it again and suggest it to others

Incredible and HOT trip!

5 stars for overall! Yes, I read the reviews that said it was a lot of driving, BUT that is what it is with this tour so you can't judge it based on that. The ease of transportation, the lunch, tour guide at Chichen Itza and the cenote were more than I expected! Carlos was exceptional as well. If you do not like a lot of people, being in the sun when it's over 100 degrees, and driving long distances this tour isn't for you. If you like history, adventures, and exploring this is for you!
