Departure Time

8:15 AM
Meet you guide at your hotel in New Orleans between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and drive 35 minutes into the countryside to reach Oak Alley Plantation. Step on board a 6 or 9 passenger airboat with graduated stadium-style seating to begin the first part of your tour.

Travel through shallow waters at up to 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour), while you learn about the surrounding wildlife from a guide with extensive knowledge about the local ecosystem. Zoom through marsh, swamp, and lake waters en route to alligator habitats where you can see these ancient reptiles up close and learn about their lives. Look up periodically to catch sight of the bird species that also call the area home, including bald eagles, pelicans, ospreys, and owls.

At the end of the boat tour, return to shore to tour the 19th-century Oak Alley Plantation, a typical antebellum plantation house. Walk down a classic alley of live oaks hung with Spanish moss on your way to the house, and then meet your docent for a guided tour inside. Afterward, spend a free hour wandering the 25-acre property or eating at the restaurant and café on site (own expense). The tour will conclude when your driver takes you back to your hotel in New Orleans.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Barataria Preserve
Your swamp tour is only 35 minutes from New Orleans, yet a world apart. This New Orleans air-boat tour is a high speed adventure that is part tour, part thrill ride. You will travel at high speeds in the 6 or 9 passenger boat, then slow down and stop for photo opportunities. Along the way, you will get a personal tour by your local Captain. Our air-boats have stadium seating, so that the person in front of you does not obstruct your view, and every seat is great for experiencing the tour and viewing the wildlife. Yes, gators will get close, very close. So close, that you will be able to look into those reptilian eyes. Alligators do hibernate in the colder months, but our experienced captains know where to look for them. On average, during the winter, you'll have better than a 50/50 chance of seeing a "gator". In the warmer months, you will see a gator. Every New Orleans air-boat tour is unique and we never know what will be around the next corner. The area toured is a combination of swamp, marsh and lake. So, you may see anything from a Bald Eagle to a pelican to Osprey to an owl. It really is that diverse. The air-boats are driven by a 454 Chevy Engine that will produce speeds of up to 35 miles an hour. They are propelled by a huge fan that will blow air from the back of the boat in excess of 200 miles an hour. These tours are truly a blast! They ride in inches of water and go where traditional boats cannot go. These boats were designed to take you to inaccessible areas of the swamp, places that you cannot reach by foot or car. It is truly a unique experience.

There are additional attractions on the grounds which includes a restaurant, cafe and gift shop. The choice is yours how you would like to use your free hour.

Great experience, well worth the time and money.

Oak Alley Plantation was absolutely beautiful, on-site restaurant was great, fast and efficient. Enjoyed hearing the history of the home and about some of the people who have lived there. Swamp boat tour was good overall, though did have some safety concerns during the tour. Lastly, our driver Barbara was outstanding. She was very personable and provided a tour guide feel during out and back ride, as a local to the area she is a tremendous asset and promoter of all things Southeast Louisiana.

The plantation tour was fantastic! The grounds were well maintained and the history was very engaging. The airboat was fun. The tour guide talked too much by displaying his personal views and opinions about EVERYTHING. Overall, my family and looked past it and enjoyed the ride.

Wonderful. Definitely book the small airboat they can get into smaller spaces. This is an experience not to be missed. If rainy weather is a potential, take a rain jacket. We got rained on and with the jacket, we were totally fine.

Excellent Tour

Our tour guide was very informative and entertaining. There was very little wait time. The small airboat was worth the extra money whereas there was a more intimate experience. The plantation was enormous and worth the visit. I recommend this tour highly.

Well worth the money

This tour was great! Besides getting out of the craziness of the French Quarter, it’s a good opportunity to see life in a different time period. Oak Alley is a great location. They bring the role of slaves on the plantation in but could probably do a little more on that. Great restaurant and amazing pralines! We choose the small air boat for the swamp. Definitely worth the money. Our guide was great. Don’t remember his name but he’s one who will actually jump in the canals to “encourage” some big gators closer. Too bad the gator was full and just wanted a nap! Would absolutely recommend this combo tour. It was a great way to spend Memorial Day.

Our bus driver was amazing stopped along the way and showed us things was super friendly and knowledgeable. the plantation and grounds were ok for me neat to see how it was just was hard to understand the tour guide at time and wished there was more history about the original family in there. But cool to see. the airboat ride was awesome the guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable stopped and let us ask questions and see the gators. we all had a great time.

Great Experience, Heads up on Safety

Tours were both wonderful - air boat was one of our most memorable experiences in NOLA. We made good time to the plantation so we had a good amount of time to look around and take pictures. Only concern which may not be a concern for others was the distancing in covid times--information about the tour said the busses would only be at half capacity and 15 ppl max but we had over 20/full capacity in ours. Windows were closed the whole time and mask use was not enforced for anyone on board. The guidelines were very recently relaxed in the state so that may have been why, but just giving a heads-up to those who are wary of such things.

Thank you for your feedback. Our state governor has lifted most restrictions as of April 28th, so we are allowed to operate at full capacity. Since you booked through a third party, they may not have updated the new information for our state yet. We understand our guests concerns, so if you or anyone ever feels uncomfortable about taking a tour, we will gladly return you to your hotel and issue you a full refund.

swamp and plantation tour
Carol_E
, Oct 2020
The swamp tour portion was awesome! Our guide was very personable and knowledgeable and rising in the airboats was a lot of fun. We loved seeing the alligators, foliage and all the wildlife, pretty much everything you would hope to see in a swamp. The plantation was beautiful and we enjoyed the short tour and the option to explore the grounds on our own. Only negatives were that the hotel we arbitrarily chose to be picked up at (Fench quarter suites)was abandoned looking so we had to stand on the street for approximately thirty minutes for our ride, also it was a much longer drive between the swamp tour and plantation than we expected, about an hour

We are sorry for your experience with the transportation. Since we do door to door pickups, we have to allot 30 minutes in order to get all of our guests. It seems like you were the last stop. We are glad that you had a great experience on tour and we thank you for the positive feedback!
