The guided tour starts in the front of the mansion and ends in the rear of the mansion.

Visit the Houmas House Plantation, dubbed ‘The Sugar Palace’ due to its contribution to the sugar boom of the late 1800s, when more than 20 million pounds of sugar were produced here annually.

Join one of the regularly scheduled House tours, at which point you’ll meet your costumed guide at the mansion’s entrance. On the tour, immerse yourself in the story and splendor of the old South as your guide leads you through lavish and traditionally decorated rooms, speckled with artwork and antiques. Hear the architectural history of the home, a stronghold plantation estate, and see the room where Bette Davis stayed while filming the 1963 movie Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.

Spend your time before and after the house tour exploring the magnificent 38‐acre (15‐hectare) estate. Leisurely wind along manicure paths and through the exquisite gardens, find a quaint sitting nook for a rest, or head to one of the estate’s restaurants or café for a locally inspired lunch – and maybe a mint julep.

The tour guide was excellent in providing information and details about the Houmas Plantation owners. The flowers and trees with ponds and waterfalls are beautiful. We had lunch in the Carriage house and it was excellent. Be sure and get the butternut soup. I highly recommend this as a must see if you are in the area to visit. Lots of history to enjoy.

Ignored slavery, gardens - nothing special, poor tour guide

Came to see gardens - nothing special. Perplexed. Did I miss something? The tour guide totally ignored slavery in his description of the building of the plantation and was in general so-so.

The plantation and grounds were GORGEOUS! The carriage house was DELICIOUS!! My only complaint is that the brochure shows ladies dressed in period attire. We only saw one lady and she was very disappointing in appearance! (I've submitted the photo)

Sad

The home is lovely and ornamented well. But the failure of the guide to deal with any of the realities of the plantation system which was built on the free labor of slaves was stunning. At one point the guide told the story of the owner freeing slaves—a ludicrous idea at its foundation—and then went on to suggest his kind nature in this act. Were slaves compensated for their toil? For loved ones lost? No, just allowed to continue sharecropping if they choose. This prompted a guest to say “how nice of him” without a hint of irony. And the nostalgia of the grand south is on full display without a hint of the gross inhumanity at its core. I get it that this is history and the system but Laura plantation deals with it so much better. Houmas is a whitewash that wears thin. It is a living testimonial to white supremacy, very sad indeed, filled with historical omissions that are glaring (including the horror of sugar crops).

Enjoyed hearing about the history and stories from our guide as we went through the house. Would love to have been there in the spring when the gardens would be in bloom

beware that you are on your own.

The place is beautiful and well maintained, BUT, the people in the reception center were arrogant and real jerks. My wife is partially blind and crippled. No wheel chairs available and acted like I was asking for the moon when i asked about one. Beware if you go there that you are on your own, absolutely no customer service. Arrogant "old south attitude at its max"

I liked everything about it. I am appreciative for the new owner for keeping his home open to the public for viewings. So first and foremost I would like to Thank Him. "Thank-you". There were so many things to see and learn, Our guide Ruth was very pleasant and knowledgeable. She made it even better as she would listen to our questions and she contained a plethora of information. It was definitely, for me, a place I would like to return to.

The grounds were beautiful and we learned a ton about the the owners and the land. The tour guide was dressed in garb from the 1800s which made the experience more fun. It was a great tour. Highly recommended

Houmas House

A lot of deep and rich history about Houmas House. Many of the artifacts and original furnitures were well preserved. The grounds of the house is beautiful and gives you a brief tale of what good living was like hundreds of years ago. Although, I would rather the tour guide not sugarcoat the house was a sugar plantation and that slaves were exploited to do the labor. This is America and that’s the true history of our cultural roots that many minorities were exploited and oppressed.
