Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Make your way to the Steamer Wharf at Queenstown’s waterfront, and present your voucher for a cruise on the TSS Earnslaw. The "TSS" in the name stands for “twin screw steamer”, and the TSS Earnslaw is the last remaining coal-fired passenger steamer in the southern hemisphere, propelled by a pair of screw propellers mounted on either side of the hull.

You have time to explore the ship during the cruise, and don’t miss the chance to head below decks to the engine room, where stokers feed a roaring coal fire. Explore the small onboard museum that's located in the forecastle, or head to the TSS Earnslaw’s café, where snacks and drinks are available for purchase. There are also dramatic views of the mountains that surround the lake, which has a maximum depth of 1,250 feet (380 meters) before making the return trip across Lake Wakatipu to Queensland’s Steamer Wharf, where this tour concludes.

Most enjoyable way to spend a couple of hour watching the spectacular scenery float by. The Earnslaw is truly worthwhile attraction to do, not only the views you get from the lake but also keep this wonderful piece of New Zealand history alive.

Where to look? Watching the steam engine or at the view beyond. Great fun. Missed the dinner cruise which was not available.

Genuine working steamboat

The working stream engine was so interesting, you could smell the coal and feel the atmosphere. The old boat was still a comfortable ride and the cafe was also good. Seen a few negative comments - if you want a luxury cruise don't come here, if you want a ride in a 1900's working steam boat then this is for you. Awrsome

A lovely sunny day which helped with a full muster. Our trip was during the holidays and it was full of excited family groups along with some couples. Everyone was enjoying the trip and many got off at Walter Peak Farm for lunch, horse-rides or tours. It was a quiet trip back!

A super trip on an old fashioned steamer up the lake from Queenstown to Walters Peak. You could watch the stoker shocellibg coal and see the engines turning or sit back on deck with a glass of wine. What a wonderful way to travel !!
